The creation of a monumental sculpture – Week 9
Day 41
I spent a lot of time enlarging and lengthening the holes in the wings. They look so much better like this and will allow more air movement through them. We have kept worrying about the wind factor and how it will affect the sculpture. The structural engineers have it worked out so Icarus will stay upright and not fly away!!
Day 42
This is a view from the back of the piece. I had the clay figure wrapped up and protected while I was putting plaster on the wings.
Day 43
This is a close-up of the figure from below and it shows the texture on the wings. Although I am happy with the texture of the body and the wings, I am still unhappy with the hands, so will need to make some changes to them.
Day 44
This side view shows the scale quite well. I am having to use the scaffolding tower every day. It is quite physically demanding and I feel quite monkey-like as I go up and down it. It is fun though!
Day 45
I love this photo. This is another sculptor’s mythological female about to pierce the heart of Icarus!
