The Hammersmith Man sculpture was commissioned by a property company for their new building, Queen Caroline House, overlooking the Hammersmith Flyover in London in 1988. The building was occupied by Polygram at the time and the figure looked uncannily like the Chairman.

The work was unveiled by George Melly.

The idea was that the work would be eye-catching and fun for the commuters coming into London every morning. It was cast into resin, by Alec Ryman and his team, and painted. It remained in situ for 15 years.

The figure was over 3 metres long.
