Icarus Fell (Amid Feathers)

A bronze sculpture of Icarus depicting his fall from the sky after the sun melted his wings

In Icarus Fell (Amid Feathers), I wanted to capture the myth of Icarus with a fresh perspective, merging ambition with vulnerability. This sculpture is the largest and most dramatic of my Icarus series, standing at 3.4 meters tall, including the rusted steel base, with a width and depth of 1.7 meters. The life-size bronze figure of Icarus is surrounded by individually sculpted feathers, symbolising his brave yet fateful flight.

Creating this pose was a journey to capture both Icarus’s defiance and his moment of realisation, with each feather crafted to highlight his fall. I chose bronze for its durability and deep patina, knowing it would age beautifully in any environment, be it a home, gallery, or outdoor display.

Creating Icarus’s pose was particularly meaningful, as I wanted his form to express defiance, freedom, and that crucial moment of realisation. The result is a piece that resonates with universal themes of risk, consequence, and the pursuit of dreams.

Icarus Fell was made in 2021 for the annual exhibition ‘FORM’, at Sculpture By The Lakes in Dorset.
